I know, I know, the title needs some work (Toe-Up Thursdays? Knit-Along Thursdays?), but since the lovely Hannah from Unsophisticated + Jejune and I are determined to make our first pair of socks, a la knit-along, I’ve decided to make it a weekly thing.
Regardless of where I am, I’ll post a picture of my progress and with any luck, I’ll have a new pair of socks in a couple of weeks. I’m really excited! I’ve never done a knit-along and I have wanted to make a pair of socks for way too long. Now, I’ve got the needles, the yarn and a fierce knitting buddy to share this first experience with! I’m really thankful to Glenna C’s post So you’ve discovered sock knitting for giving me that last little push into this project. It’s fun, encouraging and hooks you up with at least three free patterns so now there isn’t an excuse to wait. Actually, that isn’t exactly true. As of yesterday I was still thinking that while I did have the yarn, I had needles that were either too big or too small for the patterns that I was looking at, but then I re-read the post and the excuse evaporated. As long as I adjust things according to the gauge, things should work – I think. Then I saw the Nice Ribbed Sock, one of said free patterns on Ravelry, and the socks felt within my reach.
Do any of you have any last words of wisdom before I cast this on? Better yet, do you want to knit along? It doesn’t matter if this is your first pair, or your hundred and first pair, it’ll be fun. I’ve linked to the pattern above and will be adding it to the Free Patterns page of the blog. While I figure out a good title, I’ll just tag this under “Thursday Socks.”

Hello! Well done on staking out your start. I’m not sure what you mean by adjusting things according to gauge. Your tension swatch with the yarn and needles you intend to use needs to be the same as the tension stated in the pattern or they’ll work out the wrong size.

I think that’s what I meant to say- sorry, I’m new to patterns and relatively new to knitting.
I’ll knit a swatch and see how it goes – this is the first time I’ve done a gauge and hopefully I can figure out how to make these socks work 🙂

LOL! I think exclamation points are a hazard of expressing yourself. Especially when you’re excited/passionate about what your doing.

Hey, looking good! I’m glad your as excited over this as I am. I just wrote my post! I forgot to do the gauge swatch… I actually intended to do it this time too. I forget that it matters and just dive in to the pattern. I’l see how it goes… I don’t want to start twice, is that bad?

Not bad at all! I know I have the wrong needles for the project, so I have to do it – I’ve made my peace with the fact I might have to start over a time or two because: socks 😀

I’m kind of sad you killed your art blog – I get it but still, it was pretty cool. I’ll get on changing the link – I just got home and it’s much easier on the laptop.

Your wise to do it, I think I could have saved my previous sock trials if I had done it. I should, I know I should! Yes, I’m in the process of reorganising an art blog, you know when old work just becomes embarrassing? That’s what that was! 🙂

Oh I totally get that! I feel the same way about my fiction and have made the more embarrassing stuff disappear. This blog is kind of about mistakes and misadventures so I’ll keep everything up, but that isn’t to say that I won’t try to edit it until it’s right 🙂
As for the gauge, it’s just something new. I’d like to think that if I was teaching someone to knit, that I would make them to do it first, so I’m trying to take my own advice 🙂
